GENEVAJune 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies and Protracted Crises, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), released a shocking new report that indicates that the number of crisis-affected school-age children in need of educational support has risen from an estimated 75 million in 2016 to 222 million today.

Of the 222 million crisis-affected children and adolescents in urgent need of help, the survey finds that as many as 78.2 million are out of school and nearly 120 million are in school, but do not achieve the minimum proficiency in math or reading. Only one in ten crisis-affected children entering primary or secondary education actually achieve these skill standards.

“We need governments, corporations, foundations and individuals to support the vital work of Education Cannot Wait. Help us bring education within reach of every child, everywhere. Help us keep 222 million dreams alive,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres

The analysis shows that 84% of children affected by a crisis live outside of school in areas with protracted crises. The vast majority of these are in countries specifically targeted by ECW’s pioneering multi-year investments, including: AfghanistanDemocratic Republic of the CongoEthiopiaMaliNigeriaPakistanSomaliaSouthern SudanSudan and Yemen

To respond to this pressing global education crisis, ECW and strategic partners launched the #222MillionDreams campaign to mobilize resources in Geneva Today. The campaign calls on donors, the private sector, philanthropic foundations and high net worth individuals to urgently mobilize more resources to scale up ECW’s investments, which already provide quality education to more than 5 million children in more than 40 crisis-hit countries.

“The financial resources to ensure that every child and young person can receive a quality education are out there in the world. Governments, the private sector and foundations can and should unlock these resources,” said The Rt. Hon. Gordon BrownUN Special Envoy for Global Education and Chair of the ECW High Level Steering Committee.

The campaign leads to the Education Cannot Wait High-Level Financing Conference taking place February 16-17, 2023 in Geneva

“This is a global call to action. As the world grapples with the devastating effects of armed conflict, COVID-19 and climate change, 222 million children are living through these horrific experiences. Dreams come true,” said ECW Director Yasmine Sherif
