The next League of Legends champion revealed: Nilah, the Joy Unbound

The next League of Legends Champion is a botlane skirmisher with a water whip and an ancient demon in her pocket. Nilah, the Joy Unbound, is a warrior monk devoted to a legendary order that has sealed a demon of joy in a spiritual lake. In that prison, the ascetics of her order can channel the demon, but as a result, Nilah can only feel joy.

Since the Sentinels of Light imprisoned Viego in ancient Camavor at the end of their eventNilah investigates who did this and why. She discovers an even greater threat – perhaps Bel’Veth, the empty empress? – and prepares to face them so she can defeat the villains of the world and live in song and myth forever.

Nilah is a melee champion, but she thrives in the bot lane thanks to her gear, which gives her a lot of synergy with wizard supports like Lulu, Karma, and Janna.

Passive – Infinite Joy

When Nilah last hits a minion, she and the closest allied champion gain 50% of the experience that would normally be lost from sharing with nearby allies.

Nilah gains extra effectiveness from healings and shields given to her by allied champions. When a nearby ally uses an ability that either heals or shields Nilah or herself, Nilah grants the extra advantage to both herself and her ally.

Q – Shapeless Sheet

Passive: Attacks and skill damage against champions ignore some of their armor and heal Nilah for some of the damage dealt. This effect increases with the critical hit probability and can siphon, giving Nilah a shield.

Active: Nilah strikes in a line, damaging all enemies hit. Hitting an enemy will increase Nilah’s attack range and attack speed for a few seconds. In addition, her base attacks will splatter into a cone, dealing extra damage.

W – Jubilant Veil

Nilah shrouds herself in fog, giving her movement speed for a short time, reducing incoming magic damage, and dodging all incoming base attacks. Touching an ally champion hides them in the fog, giving them the same bonuses for half the duration.

E – Slipstream

Nilah dashes through a target, damaging all enemies she passes. Nilah can hold 2 loads of Slipstream at once.

Nilah can cast Formless Blade (Q) during Slipstream to draw a wave in her path, deal damage and activate her powerful attacks.

R – Apotheosis

Nilah spins her weapon in an area around her, dealing damage and pulling enemies into the center with one final salvo. This damage heals Nilah for some of the damage inflicted, turning excess healing into a shield. The healing and shielding shells with critical hit probability and are shared with nearby allies.

While some players may be tempted to try Nilah in another job or in the jungle, her gear really pays off to play with someone else, especially if that champion has shields or healings. Nilah is also quite mobile thanks to Slipstream; she doesn’t have to sit back and wait for a chance to go all in. Instead, she dances around a fight and sustains herself while dealing damage with Formless Blade.

Nilah will also be part of the Star Guardian alternate universe, where many of the popular champions are magical girl-inspired heroes. The next Star Guardian event, Return to Valoran City, kicks off on July 14.
