A ‘Destiny 2’ Warning About This Week’s Weird Sever Grief Void Challenge

Destiny 2 has many challenges which now arrive every season, but only one a week that gives you the material you need to upgrade the Crown of Sorrow in the HELMET, in addition to the material you get from the weekly story quest.

This week, Destiny 2 wants you to complete the Sever – Grief mission and defeat it with only Void, Kinetic, or Stasis damage. We previously had one with Solar, Kinetic, and Stasis, but this one has a snag.

The solar energy did not cause this problem where you can complete the mission and find that you did not get the challenge. Because…

  • The scythe that spawns during the boss fight technically counts as a solar weapon that deals sun damage, even if you haven’t equipped it in a weapon slot. It will kill the challenge. Don’t pick up the scythe, even if Eris yells at you to do so.
  • While it’s a more niche case, the Firefly perk also counts as sun damage and will kill the challenge. So leave Ace of Spades/Fatebringer at home, they are not kinetic enough for that.

During this mission can hit things with the big wrench as that counts as kinetic damage. I’m not sure if you should shoot explosive barrels, but maybe try to avoid that if you see them. Hey, if the scythe counts, who knows.

This is pretty tricky and I’m glad I was aware of this before running it as I would have been slightly annoyed doing a full Sever mission for this and couldn’t understand why I didn’t get the challenge. Which technically the reasoning here makes sense, these types of elemental challenges are usually about using certain subclasses or armor, not deal elemental damage denying things like the scythe and firefly as the wrong type of damage.

There will probably be another one of these, no doubt with Arc, Stasis and Kinetic, and the same rules apply there. Solarweek could use the scythe and Firefly no problem, but the other two couldn’t.

Anyway I’m done upgrading my Crown of Sorrow as all I have left is the middle row full of upgrades for the currency I can’t get rid of fast enough unlike Umbral energy which is much less available . But I also just finished my last frame to have all six Haunted weapons and all four Opulent weapons ready for crafting so some of the work is done for me. Now back to dungeon farming.
